The form
Dry tobacco of rough cutting is sharp, such as, for example, mixtures
My Own Blend No.7000 or King Frederic Full, is better smoked in
pipe with the big open bowl. The sated, aromatic, dark grades of
tobacco like Bourbon, is better to smoke in a pipe with small, not
too high bowl. Otherwise, closer to the end of filling taste of
tobacco will be distorting, spoiled and absolutely not suitable
for smoking.
The matter is that the bottom part of filling works as the filter
which absorbs all moisture containing in the smoke passing through
it, and with it typical taste for this tobacco. And as such tobacco
is already primary with the strong, sated, bright taste it is obvious
excess. Condensate gathers in cup too much, so the pipe starts “gurgle”,
and “rattle”.
Light dry tobaccos, are usually prepared in the form of thin dry
plates which before smoking should be pounded in the hand. Such
type of tobacco is “Flake”. Or in the form of small
rolls – “Curly Cut” or “Spoon”. At
manufacturing this type of tobacco, leaves of different sorts rolled
up in the long roller which then is cut. Thus in section tobacco
represents mosaic.
Such tobacco you should smoke in pipes of average size, it is desirable
with high and narrow bowls. Dry tobaccos better than previous filter
passing through them smoke and also better absorb moisture that
does not allow it to gather at the bottom. As a rule they are, not
so strong on saturation, also do not give the sensation of "weight",
excessive density of taste.
The size
Ideally, the tobacco chamber should be of such size that will suit
to the quantity of tobacco which you usually smoke at one dash.
Some people like “long-playing” pipes with which it
is possible to puff away at a pipe nearly hours. Others prefer absolutely
small, tiny tubes where the content of tobacco is similar to the
content in one cigarette.
The weight
It is natural, that if the pipe size is big, the weight also big.
But even two identical in the size pipes can have significant difference
in weight because of distinction in density or wood sort from which
they are made. Pear or cherry pipes of the identical size with pipes
made from brier, much light weight. It is considered that in such
case better to chose heavier pipe because it is stronger, and durable.
But it depends on your taste.
By the way, don’t consider cherry, pear pipes or pipes from
olive tree as second-grade or “frivolous”. There are
good samples of various firms made from this tree breeds. As a rule,
they are much lighter pipes from brier, they are a bit another on
taste, with “nicety” and nuances. Probably, their unique
lack in that they less strong, than brier pipes.
